Using the criteria established by the donors, the Baltimore City College Faculty Committee for Scholarship Selection chooses the annual recipients of endowed scholarships held by The Trustees of the Baltimore City College Scholarship Funds, Inc.

Edward L. Torsh / Class of 1868 Scholarship
Established in 1928 by Edward L. Torsh and members of the Class of 1868. Awarded to graduates most outstanding for manners and conduct as well as excellence in scholarships. Student must be in the top 10% of the senior class and an Honor Society member. Campbell Bernstein Slusky Scholarship
Established in 2005 by Neil R. Bernstein, Class of 1954, in memory of Irene Campbell Bernstein, his mother and Stanton H. Slusky, his cousin, Class of 1950. Awarded to the most diversely talented graduating senior who has achieved an academic rank in the top twenty percent of his or her class and earned a varsity athletic letter and participated for at least two years in a Baltimore City College instrumental or vocal music group. Lee Dean Barron, Jr. Scholarships
Established in 1999 by Lee Dean Barron, Jr., Class of 1949, and first provided for the Baltimore City College Class of 2009. Awarded annually to several graduating seniors who have attained an academic rank in the top 25% of their graduating class based on attendance for four years at Baltimore City College as well a record of diverse and involved participation in co-curricular activities and/or athletic activities. Douglas H. Rose Scholarship
Established in 1911 to enable students outstanding in scholarship and leadership to continue in college. Awarded in memory of Judge Douglas H. Rose, Class of 1880. Calvin E. Tyler Jr. Scholarship
Established in 2005 by Calvin E. Tyler, Jr. Baltimore City College Class of 1960. Awarded annually to a graduating senior who is a resident of Baltimore and is deserving of financial assistance to attend an institution of higher learning. Israel Krieger Scholarship
Established in 1929 by Israel Krieger, brother of Zanvyl Krieger Class of 1924, to enable worthy students to continue in college. Mary R. Dudley Scholarships to Morgan State University
Established in 1972 by a bequest from the estate of Mary R. Dudley. Awarded to African American graduates who have demonstrated academic achievement, good moral charter and financial need. Henry C. Wentz Memorial Prize Scholarship
Established in 1984 by a bequest from Frances Virginia Wentz Turner. Awarded for the achievement in Biology in memory of Henry C. Wentz who taught natural sciences at Baltimore City College from 1862 to 1866. John C. Wentz Jr. Memorial Prize Scholarship
Established in 1984 by a request from Frances Virginia Wentz Turner. Awarded for achievement in Foreign of Classical Languages in memory of John C. Wentz Jr. who taught Greek Latin and German at Baltimore City College from 1857 to 1866. In 1866 Wentz was elected the first president of Alumni Association. Sylvan Shane Scholarship
Established in 1987 by Sylvan Shane, Class of 1936. Awarded to the graduating senior with the most exceptional achievement in journalism as demonstrated by his or her contribution to a student publication at the Baltimore City College. Hyman “Lefty’ Stern Athletic Achievement Scholarship
Established in 1988 by the family of Hyman Stern, Class of 1926. Mr. Stern was the first inductee into the Baltimore City College Hall of Fame for athletic achievement. Awarded to the graduating senior selected as the outstanding athlete at Baltimore City College because he or she has lettered in at least one varsity sport and demonstrated team leadership and team play, competitive spirit and determination, integrity and modesty and the potential for academic achievement in an institution of higher education. Andre S. Wickham Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1993 by the friends of Andre S. Wickham, Class of 1960. Awarded to the graduating senior who has excelled in the study of a Foreign Language at Baltimore City College in memory of Mr. Wickham who served in the Foreign Language department at his alma mater as well as at other City of Baltimore high schools. Alan B. Snyder and Susan R. Katz-Snyder Scholarship
Established in 1997 by a gift from Alan B. Snyder, Class of 1960. Awarded to the graduating senior who shows the greatest promise of contributing to the overall community through dedication and service. Dr. Ephram T. Lisansky Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1994 in memory of Ephraim T. Lisansky M.D., Class of 1930, by Sylvia T. Lisansky, his wife and her family. Awarded to the graduating senior who between the freshman and senior year has made the most significant improvement in academic performance. John F. Steadman Memorial Scholarship
Awarded initially in 2002 and subsequently to the senior who has achieved academically, especially in the junior and senior years. A student with demonstrated interest in Journalism, writing for some form of media, will be strongly considered as will those who have exhibited the ideals that constantly guided John F. Steadman, Class of 1945: the highest integrity and ethical standards, and a commitment to helping one’s fellow man. Harold Greenwald Memorial Scholarship
Established in March 2006 by family and friends to honor the memory of Harold Greenwald, alumnus of the Class of 1928 and faculty member for 36 years. Awarded annually to graduating senior who demonstrates intellectual curiosity and love of American History; has achieved academic excellence in the field and intends to pursue studies at an institution of higher learning. Lemuel C. and William M. Dunbar Scholarship
Established in 2007 by William M. Dunbar, Baltimore City College Class of 1949, in memory of his father, Lemuel C. Dunbar, Baltimore City College Class of 1923, and to commemorate the esteem which they shared for their alma mater. Awarded annually to a Baltimore City College graduating senior who has demonstrated service to the school by being elected class officer or student government officer. Carl Otto Schoenrich Memorial Award
Established with the City of Baltimore in 1947 and transferred in 2008, honoring the memory of Carl Otto Schoenrich, a former member of the Baltimore City College faculty. Awarded as a scholarship to the Baltimore City College graduating senior to recognize excellence in German. Baltimore City College Alumni Prize Scholarship
Endowed in 1995 to commemorate the founding of the Baltimore City College in 1839 and the support of their alma mater by its graduates since the founding of the Alumni Association in 1866. Awarded to the best member of the graduating class who has demonstrated superior academic ability, extraordinary service to the school and potential for significant achievement in an institution of higher learning. |
Aaron Straus Scholarships
Established in 1959 by a bequest from the estate of Aaron Straus, Class of 1898, to further the education of worthy and needy students. Student must be in the top 25% of their graduating class and have been involved in part-time employment for at least 12 consecutive months to support his or her family. Edgar J. Kassan Memorial Award
Established with the City of Baltimore in 1961 and transferred in 2008, honoring the memory of Edgar J. Kassan, Baltimore City College Class of 1938. Awarded as a scholarship to a member of the Baltimore City College senior class for proficiency in the field of English and outstanding service to the school community. Hugh P. McCormick Scholarship
Established in 2009 with a contribution from Hugh P. McCormick, Baltimore City College Class of 1938. Awarded annually to the Baltimore City College graduating senior with the highest academic standing who matriculates to the John Hopkins University. Mark D. and Judith L. Coplin Scholarship Fund
Awarded to a graduating senior who is in need of financial assistance, has shown excellence in studies and leadership in extracurricular activities and intends to enter an institution of higher learning. Frank C. Knaack Scholarship Award
Established in 2015 with a bequest from Frank C. Knaack, Baltimore City College Class of 1950. First available to be awarded in 2017 and then annually thereafter to a graduating senior in the top third of the class who intends to focus his or her higher education on a teaching career in either K through 12 or Higher Education. Joseph Meyerhoff Memorial Scholarship
Initiated in 1984 by Joseph Meyerhoff, Class of 1916, and funded by the Joseph Meyerhoff Fund and Memorial Trust. Awarded to the graduating senior with the most exceptional combination of academic achievement, service to school and service to community. Royce Diener Fund
Established in 1984 by a gift from Royce Diener, Class of 1935. Provides annual support for the Baltimore City College co curricular program at the discretion of the Principal. Corbin Gwaltney Scholarship Prize For The Class Valedictorian
Provided by Corbin Gwaltney Class of 1939, for the Class of 1986 through 1989 and subsequently endowed in perpetuity by him in 1990. Awarded to recognize academic achievement and promise. Alfred H. Moses Scholarship
Established in 1988 by Alfred H. Moses, Class of 1947. Awarded to the graduating senior who holds the greatest promise of contributing to the general community through dedication and service and who requires financial assistance to matriculate to an institution of higher education. Dr. Edgar F. and Phoebe R. Berman Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1989 in memory of Edger Berman, M.D., Class of 1932, by Phoebe Berman, his wife. Revised by the Trustees in 1999 to include the name of Mrs. Berman. Awarded to the graduating senior who most exhibits a spirit of intellectual inquiry, demonstrates sincere caring for his or her fellow human beings and is in need of financial assistance. Robert E. Seney Excellence in English Scholarship
Established in 1999 by his brother, John M. Seney Jr., Class of 1942, to honor the memory of Robert E. Seney, a 1944 graduate and later teacher at Baltimore City College. Awarded annually to the student who attains at least a 90 senior year grade point average, and who exhibits a high degree of development and use of the English language in all its forms, both written and oral. S. Peter Lebowitz Scholarship
Established in 1994 by S. Peter Lebowitz, Class of 1948. Awarded to the graduating senior with the most significant achievement in the practicum program at the Baltimore City College. Hyman Cohen Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1994 in memory of Hyman Cohen, Class of 1932, by Jo-Ann D. Cohen and Howard L. Cohen, his daughter and son. Awarded to the graduating senior with the most significant academic achievement in his or her four years at Baltimore City College who intends to pursue a higher education program in Elementary Education. Class of February, 1943 Scholarship
Established in 2001 by the surviving members of the Baltimore City College Class of February 1943. Awarded to the graduating senior who has excelled in epitomizing the levels of aspiration and achievement which are traditional at Baltimore City College. Judge Robert H. Hammerman Memorial Scholarship
Established in October 2006 by the Friends, Family and Lancers Club to honor the memory of Judge Robert I.H. Hammerman. Awarded annually to the graduating senior who will be attending the Johns Hopkins University and who has financial need. The Deana and Gerald Stempler Scholarship
Established in 200 by The Stempler Family Foundation. Awarded to the graduating senior who is deemed in need of financial assistance to attend an institution of higher learning. Robert W. Schafer Scholarship
Established in 2008 with a contribution from Robert W. Schaefer, Baltimore City College Class of 1957, in recognition of enduring tradition of the Baltimore City College as exemplified in his time by guidance and encouragement of Norris “Pop” Harris, a faculty member in the Commercial Department from 1917 through 1958. Awarded annually to a Baltimore City College graduating senior, preferably a young woman, deserving of financial assistance, and a resident of Baltimore City who will be attending the Merrick School of Business at the University of Baltimore. Irving Berman Memorial Scholarship
Established with the City of Baltimore by bequest in 1972 from Irving Berman, Baltimore City College Class of 1927 and transferred in 2008. Awarded to worthy students of Baltimore City College to attend institutions of higher learning. J. P. Grant Scholarship
Established in 2011 by J.P. Grant. Awarded annually to the graduating senior demonstrating academic excellence and an entrepreneurial spirit to pursue studies in business at an institution of higher learning. |
