Phillip Bass '71
2 YEAR TERM

The accomplishments of Phillip L. Bass (’71) often precede him. With his over 25 years of experience in the Elevator Industry, 20 years of volunteerism with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and becoming the first African American in Baltimore City to don the title of Master Electrician Restricted Elevator License, Qualified Elevator Inspector, Maintenance Supervisor for Elevators and Expert Witness for Elevator Accidents would enough to make the casual observer take note and applaud. Accolades aside, Bass channels his devotion to a greater cause. He has served as President of the BCC Alumni Board (2005-2006) to help further BCC’s growing legacy. His loyalty is always devoted to the holistic progression to his alma mater, but understands that his civic duty limns beyond the Castle on The Hill and onto his native Monumental City.

The rhetoric of detractors and cynics is a dime a dozen when discussing the state of Baltimore’s future leaders, but Bass takes the road less ventured. “I always took attitude that those who complain about a situation should do something to change it,” Bass says with a subtle hint of urgency in his voice. “If you’re persistent, I mean really non-stop, something positive will happen.” That it has. Whether public or parochial, Bass has given his time and wealth of knowledge in this area of Science to a host of schools. From St. Bernadine’s Catholic School to Douglas Senior High School, he has made his presence felt via after school science experiments and fostered a lasting rapport with students through as host of initiatives by the National Technical Association (NTA), Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA), NSBE and 4-H. His mentorship resulted in St. Frances Academy’s gaining the coveted title of NSBE’s High School of the Year in 2000. Bass continued his outreach as the as the NSBE Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Coordinator in the following years.

Over the past 38 years Mr. Bass has been an active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated. Of which he was one of the charter members of the Epsilon Psi Chapter at the University of Maryland, College Park.   He has been a member of the Black Alumni Chapter at Maryland.  Currently he is a member of the Tri-Sigma Graduate Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated, in Montgomery County Maryland.

Phillip L. Bass is the personification of an unyielding dedication to education and service. Wonder where he gets this determination for success of himself and others? Look at the ring—he’s a Collegian.
