BCC 175th GALA ANNIVERSARY

Dear Baltimore City College Alumnus,

Baltimore City College was founded on October 23, 1839, the school will be celebrating its 175th anniversary in October, 2014.

It is with great pride that I, as chairman/coordinator of BCC’s 175th Gala, to announce that The GALA Anniversary Party will be held on October 25, 2014 at Martin’s Valley Mansion in Hunt Valley, MD. This will be a black tie affair (tux or black business suit with an orange tie [this is not optional]).* The cost will be $125.00 p.p., all inclusive.**

The 175th Gala celebration will be ‘kicked off’ at the CITY vs. POLY 125th football meet in November, 2013. This game is the oldest continuing high school rivalry in the United States. It is older than the Army/Navy games. At the moment we are drawing some attention from ESPN-TV about some type of coverage, maybe delayed tape replay. But, mainly they are interested in the fact of the historical nature of this game. We are also into discussion with major networks to try to help highlight not only the game but the Gala as well. From November, 2013 until October, 2014 the Gala committee is going to be working to keep City College in the news as much as possible.

The Gala committee is working closely with the BCC Alumni Association in encouraging all classes that are considering reunions that year to participate in this event.

At the moment some of your fellow classmates who are involved in the Gala Committee are: Anita Allen ’82, Edward Amos ’59, Calvin Anderson ’63, Wayne R. Brown ’70, Cinese Caldwell ’94, Steve Clendenin, George Doetsch, Jr. ’59, Leah Douthard ’89, Joel Eiseman ’59, Howard Fink ’59, Dr. Robert Fleishman ’56, Donald Garner ’70, Elliott Goldberg ’59, Michael Hamilton ’69, Cindy Harcum ’88, Carla Hopkins ’83, Jacob Howard ’74, Shannon Jones ’82, Ed Rose ’55, Sophia Rudisill ’95, Leo Sirota ’47, Jack Smolenki ’59, Diandra Taylor, Tom Vondersmith ’58, Charles E. Walker ’59, Michael Wells ’69 and hopefully more as we continue.

Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas, etc. or contributions big or small would definitely be appreciated.

As Always, CITY FOREVER!

Baltimore City College to Receive $1.2 million for Track and Athletic Field Renovation

Under the leadership of Curtis S. Anderson’67 Delegate from the 43rd District and the Baltimore City Delegation, funds totaling 9 million dollars were given to the Baltimore City Public school system. Recently, Curtis S. Anderson '67 and Jacob Howard, III '74 requested a meeting with Dr. Alonso. Dr. Alonso was out of town, so they met with Ms. Dawana Sterrette Legislative Liaison and Mr. Keith Scoggins Chief Operating Officer. At this meeting Mr. Anderson and Mr. Howard express the dire need to use some of these funds to renovate the track and field at Baltimore City College. Curtis Anderson had a follow up meeting with Dr. Alonso and on 8/4/2011 received the attached letter stating we had been given the funds to renovate the field.

Please congratulate Curtis S. Anderson for his hard work on this endeavor. A lot of work by us has gone on over the past ten years, but without the funding this project would never have happen.

The project will start in September with the hiring of an engineer and conclude with the project being completed in August of 2012. Please see attached letter for the complete schedule.

The Alumni Association now has to step up to the plate. We need to raise approximately $100,000 for a new fence to protect the field. This money must be raised before construction starts in March of 2012. We can do this if we all work together. The next phase will be to raise funds for new seating and lights.

On 9/14/2011 The Alumni Association will present a ground breaking ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 8:45 am on Alumni Field. A reception will take place in room 150 at 8am. The ceremony itself should last no more than 20 minutes. We will be inviting the Baltimore Delegation of the State Legislator, Senator’s Cardin and Mikulski, Congressman Cummings, and Ruppersberger, Governor O’Malley and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. All of the local media will be invited.

A student representative from the following teams, that will be using the field, will do the actual ground breaking: Varsity Football, JV Football, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Lacrosse, Track and Cross Country teams.

Please make every attempt to be there for this historic occasion. This is a time when the Baltimore City College Alumni Association needs to show what it has done for the school.
