An Important Message from BCCAA, Inc. President J.D. Merrill

11/17/2016

Picture
In recent weeks a number of City College students and faculty have been robbed at our bus stops and while walking in the area around school. The Baltimore City College Alumni Association is responding by organizing safety volunteers to help keep the community safe. This work is being done in coordination with Baltimore City Police Department, Baltimore City Public Schools Police, and Maryland Transit Authority Police. Volunteers will be provided with a safety vest, radio, observation partner, and location. Volunteers will observe key locations where students have been targeted in recent weeks and will radio to a roving police officer in the event of an incident or suspicious activity.

BALTIMORE – The Torch Burning Bright campaign will officially kick off a major $2 million effort for Baltimore City College High School’s new library on January 20, 2015 at 8:30 a.m.
The Torch Burning Bright campaign is working in partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools, City College alumni, parents, students, faculty and the larger Baltimore community to build a cutting-edge academic hub suitable for the nationally renowned college-preparatory school now in its 176th year.

The campaign will raise the funds needed to build a new library in a building that opened in 1928. Funds will also be used to purchase state-of-the-art equipment, including computers with ready access to online databases and other digital resources. The goal is to create a modern academic center where students can research and learn and be well-equipped to meet the demands of the digital age. The installation of a new technology infrastructure will enable a significant number of students to gain Internet access that they currently lack.

The Torch Burning Bright campaign is co-chaired by two City College alumni, University of Baltimore President and former Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke and Abell Foundation President Robert Embry.
In just six months, Torch Burning Bright has secured nearly $674,000 in contributions and commitments from individuals, foundations and corporations, as well as the Baltimore City Public Schools.

Among the many contributors are the Abell Foundation, the France-Merrick Foundation and the Goldseker Foundation. Wells Fargo is sponsoring the campaign kickoff assembly.
For decades, City College has produced alumni who have been successful leaders in business, government and the arts. This campaign will help ensure that this tradition of excellence continues for generations to come.

BCC Receives $1.2 Million for Track and Athletic Field Renovation

8/7/2011

Comments

Under the leadership of Curtis S. Anderson’67 Delegate from the 43rd District and the Baltimore City Delegation, funds totaling 9 million dollars were given to the Baltimore City Public school system. Recently, Curtis S. Anderson ’67 and Jacob Howard, III ’74 requested a meeting with Dr. Alonso. Dr. Alonso was out of town, so they met with Ms. Dawana Sterrette Legislative Liaison and Mr. Keith Scoggins Chief Operating Officer. At this meeting Mr. Anderson and Mr. Howard express the dire need to use some of these funds to renovate the track and field at Baltimore City College. Curtis Anderson had a follow up meeting with Dr. Alonso and on 8/4/2011 received the letter below, stating we had been given the funds to renovate the field.
Please congratulate Curtis S. Anderson for his hard work on this endeavor. A lot of work by us has gone on over the past ten years, but without the funding this project would never have happen.
The project will start in September with the hiring of an engineer and conclude with the project being completed in August of 2012. Please see attached letter for the complete schedule.
The Alumni Association now has to step up to the plate. We need to raise approximately $100,000 for a new fence to protect the field. This money must be raised before construction starts in March of 2012. We can do this if we all work together. The next phase will be to raise funds for new seating and lights.
On 9/14/2011 The Alumni Association will present a ground breaking ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 8:45 am on Alumni Field. A reception will take place in room 150 at 8am. The ceremony itself should last no more than 20 minutes. We will be inviting the Baltimore Delegation of the State Legislator, Senator’s Cardin and Mikulski, Congressman Cummings, and Ruppersberger, Governor O’Malley and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. All of the local media will be invited.
A student representative from the following teams, that will be using the field, will do the actual ground breaking: Varsity Football, JV Football, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Lacrosse, Track and Cross Country teams.
Please make every attempt to be there for this historic occasion. This is a time when the Baltimore City College Alumni Association needs to show what it has done for the school.

Summer Bridge Program

The Baltimore City College Alumni will be participating in the Summer Bridge Program at BCC. Summer Bridge is an orientation program for the incoming freshman class. In 2007, alumni president, Jacob Howard ‘74, came up with the idea of having a scavenger hunt for the incoming freshman class. Each student was given a list of questions pertaining to the history and tradition of City. The students had to tour the building in order to answer some of the questions. The questions asked were centered around items in the building, history and traditions of Baltimore City College. Again this year, the BCCAA will sponsor the scavenger hunt. Each student will be given a list of questions to complete. The first student to correctly answer the most questions will receive a $75 gift certificate to the school store. Other prizes will be $50 and $25 gift certificates and tickets to City-Poly game. On Aug 8, 2010, in the school auditorium, the Alumni Association will make its presentation to the incoming class of 2014. All Alumni are welcome to attend.
